The RSPCA is calling for public help to find the person or persons who shot a butcherbird with a homemade dart last week.

RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty said a member of the public called the RSPCA last week to a butcherbird located at 381 Kianawah Rd, Hemmant.

Mr Beatty said the butcherbird had been shot with a homemade dart about 15cm that had “most likely been in the bird for a couple of days”.

“The wound was infected and the bird, who was otherwise healthy, would have been in significant pain,” Mr Beatty said.

“Sadly the bird has since died. Anyone with any information should call 1300 ANIMAL.”

Mr Beatty said the injury to the butcherbird was “very disturbing” and he urged anyone with information to come forward.

He said the penalty for animal cruelty carried a maximum three year prison term.
