Beaming sunshine and scorching temperatures did little to detract from crowds flocking to a park north of Brisbane on Sunday to celebrate one of the most important dates on the southeast Asian calendar.

Hundreds turned out to Pine Rivers Park to immerse themselves in tradition celebrating the Harvest Moon Festival.

Brisbane North Chinese Association founding president Carl Wu said the festival celebrates three fundamental concepts, gathering, thanksgiving and praying.

“Gathering, such as family and friends gather together or harvesting crops for the festival. It’s believed that the moon is brightest and roundest on this day which means family reunion,” he said.

“Thanksgiving to give thanks for the harvest, or for harmonious unions.

“(And) praying on the day people asking for conceptual or material satisfaction.”

Mr Wu said the festival was also a great opportunity to unite the community.

“(It) is a great platform to unite diversity communities together, to learn each other, to share their own culture and to work together as a team,” he said.

“It was also a great platform for family reunion (and to) enjoy a full fun day of entertainment.”
