Decked out with three cars, plenty of hiding places and platforms it is hard to believe this new gelball arena was once a supermarket.

Crossfire Gelball is due to open in Morayfield in May, in the former Golden Circle Warehouse on Morayfield Rd.

Brothers Nathan and Aaron Barroqueiro have spent months transforming the space.

The duo, both tradesmen, grew up playing paintball but made the switch to gelball a few years ago.

“It is really growing and people are starting to enjoy it as a sport,” Nathan said.

Gelball blasters were one of the most popular Christmas toys in 2020 and the brothers said the sport had experienced a boom during COVID-19.

With no indoor venues in the region the brothers thought they would build their own.

“It has been something we have wanted to do for about 18 months, but we had to find the right location,” Aaron said.

Now they are just weeks away from opening.

“People from Toowoomba, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and even interstate are messaging our Facebook page and asking when we will be opening,” Nathan said.

The brothers vision is for the space to be a place lovers of the sport as well as mates and families can come together to play.

“We have made it wheelchair friendly and have been speaking to veteran groups, we have also had inquiries from people looking to hold hen’s parties here,” Nathan said.

“The women’s side of the sport is really growing.”

Safety has been the brothers’ number one priority with a lot of their protocols taken from the paintball industry including a racking room.

They also support the State Government’s Stop and Think campaign and will have signage up around the venue.

The racking room is fitted out with a television as well for the induction video and so players can watch the game on before theirs.

All players will be required to wear eye protection and safety gear.

Players will also be able to bring their own blaster, which will need to pass a safety check, or hire one from the centre.

The duo hope the venture will provide a boost to surrounding business owners as well.

A gel blaster store is set to open next door to the arena.

Aaron said they had purposefully chosen not to sell food or coffee at their venue to encourage players to visit one of the nearby local eateries and restaurants after their game.

Once up and running the brothers’ expect to hire six to seven people.

Gelball Crossfire will be open weekends, three nights a week and on school holidays.
