Council unveils first plans of Brendale BMX complex

The first concept drawings of the planned BMX complex at Brendale have been unveiled by council.

The national BMX precinct planned for Brendale is a step closer after the Moreton Bay Regional Council unveiled design concepts this week.

Deputy Mayor and Division 9 councillor Mike Charlton joined six-time world BMX champion and Warner resident Thomas Tucker and under-9 world champion Fraser Vaughan at the Pine Rivers BMX Club to reveal the plans for a new clubhouse for the facility at Nolan Park.

“Our region’s BMX riders have been making a name for themselves on the world stage, and with the inclusion of the sport in the Olympics, we want to make Moreton Bay a major hub for BMX,” Cr Charlton said.

“This is just the first taste of the Nolan Park BMX precinct, which will be built to a national standard complete with professional-grade racetrack, grandstands and eatery.

The new facility will attract club, national and even international events to the region and become the new home of the Pine Rivers BMX club.

Cr Charlton said with the average sport tourist spending $273 a day, the precinct would provide a huge boost for the local economy.

“BMX continues to grow with national membership eclipsing 25,000 in 2017, and Moreton Bay is in a strong position to capitalise on the sport’s growth.

The announcement comes after council allocated $50,000 in its 2018/19 budget to start detailed design works on the new facility.

“Council is now finalising its master plan for the site, with detailed design work to commence shortly after in 2019.”

Fresh from his win in Azerbaijan, Thomas Tucker said he was thrilled at the announcement.

“I can’t wait. It’s going to be awesome to have a track where we can train and compete for our club and Australia,” Thomas said.

Pine Rivers BMX Club president Mark Vaughan said he was impressed with the concept images and that the unveiling marked the beginning of the club’s relocation from its old facility on Leitchs Road to Nolan Park.

“The BMX community has been pining for a new facility in southeast Queensland that can host national and state events, so this announcement is great news,” Mr Vaughan said.

“With BMX in the Olympics, the number of kids signing up to race has spiked in recent years and I was beginning to wonder where we would fit them all.

“A new BMX precinct will definitely give our club room to grow and bring the sport’s biggest events to this part of Queensland.”
