SIX candidates will contest the marginal seat of Petrie in the 2016 federal election. Here are their profiles.
CATHERINE BUCKLEY, LIBERAL DEMOCRATS
Suburb: Bracken Ridge
Profession: Tender writing and pricing professional
What is your No.1 priority for the Petrie electorate?
To cut wasteful spending and balance the budget, so that our children don’t have to pay off this generation’s accumulated debt.
How will you address it locally?
I hope to illustrate, locally and federally, the amount of money that is diverted into the system by our recent governments just to keep the bureaucracy operating and ever expanding.
LUKE HOWARTH, LIBERAL NATIONAL PARTY
Suburb: Clontarf
Profession: Federal Member for Petrie
What is your No.1 priority for the Petrie electorate? Jobs and growing the local economy
How will you address it locally? For the past three years I have worked hard for locals and have a proven track record, delivering infrastructure and community projects. My Job Seeker Boot Camps and support for small business have seen unemployment and youth unemployment fall. I have secured funding for an upgrade to Rothwell roundabout, the Deception Bay PCYC, Dolphins Stadium and more.
JACQUI PEDERSEN, AUSTRALIAN LABOR PARTY
Suburb: Brighton
Profession: Community development officer
What is your No.1 priority for the Petrie electorate?
Jacqui’s No.1 priority is protecting Medicare for Petrie residents. She believes all Australians should have access to high-quality health care. Labor has blocked three versions of the Abbott-Turnbull governments’ GP tax and will ensure healthcare remains accessible.
How will you address this locally? Jacqui plans to ensure this locally by fighting against Mr Turnbull’s $11.8 billion cut to Queensland’s hospitals. She will fight this cut locally.
MARK A WHITE, FAMILY FIRST PARTY
Quest Community News sought a candidate profile from Mr White via email and telephone, without a response.
A brief biography is on the Family First website, but it does not list his priorities for the Petrie electorate in particular.
SUE WEBER, THE GREENS
Suburb: Narangba
Profession: Barrister and mediator
What is your No.1 priority for the Petrie electorate?
Housing affordability. The cost of buying or renting is too high and it’s only going to get worse if we don’t change our system. It’s too hard for first-home buyers and renters to find quality housing near where they work and play.
How will you address it locally? Negative gearing is driving up prices in comparison to incomes. The Greens want to reform negative gearing to make it easier for first-home buyers to get into the market, and reinvest the revenue into affordable housing.
ANDREW CHARLES TYRRELL, THE ARTS PARTY
Suburb: Woody Point
Profession: Truck delivery driver
What is your No.1 priority for the Petrie electorate?
The Petrie electorate needs the road infrastructure to be modernised between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. They never build for what the hardworking taxpayers deserve.
How will you address it locally?
The best way to address this locally is to vote for me federally.
