Camping and 4WDing reopens on Bribie Island after being closed for months due to COVID-19

Four-wheel drivers and campers are able to explore Bribie Island National Park for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out but there are few steps you have to take before you can visit.

Social distancing eases in parts of Australia

National Parks, forests and recreation areas including Bribie Island are set to reopen but there are steps keen adventurers will have to take first.

Environment minister Leeanne Enoch said Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service managed campgrounds, which were closed due to COVID-19, were once again open to the public with camping set to start from today.

Bookings will be essential and campers must have the appropriate permits.

Visitor numbers will be restricted in the Cooloola and Bribie Island recreation areas and people will need to apply for a specific COVID-19 Access Authority pass to enter – there is no extra cost for this.

Ms Enoch said picnic tables, barbecues within the camping facilities would also reopen. But public showers will remain closed.

Capacity at some grounds might also be reduced to allow for social distancing measures.

Ms Enoch thanked Queenslanders for their patience while measures were put in place to reopen campgrounds and booking systems.

“Queenslanders love a camping holiday. We have some of the most beautiful national parks in the world and it’s great to see so much enthusiasm from people to get out and support local tourism and businesses,” she said.

Bookings must be made online and will not be accepted by telephone or through QPWS counters or agents.
