A Caboolture business owner used drugs to treat anxiety and sciatica, a court has heard.

Roland Balazs, 34, was sentenced on July 29, 2022 in Caboolture Magistrates Court, to nine months of probation after pleading guilty to 17 drug offences between 2020 and 2022.

The owner of Roland’s Car Detailing, a mobile car service, represented himself in court, explaining his use of cannabis is to treat his anxiety and sciatica.

The court heard that between March and May 2022, Balazs was charged with 10 counts of supplying cannabis and three counts of producing cannabis.

Balazs was also charged with possessing an electric grinder on May 29, 2022 and in May 2020 for possessing water pipes used for smoking dangerous drugs and possessing a document containing instructions for to produce a dangerous drug.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Peter Mitchelson said Balazs’ drug history spoke for itself and he needed to deal with his cannabis use immediately.

Balazs said he started growing cannabis for himself and friends, not seeing it as a big deal.

“Part of the reason why I don’t have my solicitor with me today is I never answered his phone calls leading up to today because of my anxiety,’’ Balazs said.

Balazs has completed a certificate III in fitness and mentioned he had a passion for growing plants, not just cannabis, expressing interest in completing a certificate in horticulture and working in a nursery.

He also spoke about previously being an alcoholic for eight years prior to cannabis use, saying he underwent a week detox at the Royal Brisbane and Women‘s Hospital.

Magistrate Raelene Ellis noted Balazs’ said despite using the drug for pain and anxiety, it was “illegal to grow it’.

“Get your script for legalised cannabis if that’s what you need to help your health issues,” she said.

A conviction was recorded.
