Bribie Bridge through the years
Bribie Island Bridge was officially opened on October 19, 1963. Now, 55 years on, the structure still serves as the passage between the mainland and the island.
2/218/8/1963. Investigators start probing the cause of an industrial accident during construction of the Bribie Island bridge, north of Brisbane. A crane’s mechanism failed as a bearer was being lifted into place on the Bribie end of the bridge, allowing the 22m pre-stressed concrete bearer to crash into the water. Picture by Ray Saunders.
