A former state government facility north of Brisbane will be knocked down to make way for a new community hub.
Moreton Bay Regional Council took ownership of the former Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries research centre at Deception Bay in 2012 during a land swap deal.
The site at the corner of Joseph Crescent and Beach St, was then leased to the Queensland Police Service for use as a training facility.
In 2017 council announced its plans to turn the rundown facility into a community hub.
Councillor Peter Flannery (Div 2) said council was preparing to start demolishing the existing buildings.
“Infrastructure will be demolished and removed from site by June 2019,” Cr Flannery said.
“Detailed planning following on from the initial concept for the site will commence in 2019/20 followed by detailed design in 2020/21, with construction to commence on the first stage of the $2.3 million project in 21/22 and be completed in 22/23.
“Council is excited about leisure and cultural benefits this community hub will offer residents and visitors of Deception Bay.”
Council previously said the site could include a playground, meeting area, kiosk and indigenous displays.
Public consultation sessions were held during October 2017.
