Marksman Dane Sampson — determined to get a medal in Rio — did not begin his Olympic redemption with the bang he wanted to.

Sampson, who had a disappointing Olympic debut in London, placed 37th in the 10m air rifle event with a score of 619.3 in Rio overnight.

The former Arana Hills resident, coached by Petr Kurker, placed 42nd in the event in London.

The 29-year-old has two more chances to stand proud on the podium for Australia.

Next up for Sampson is 50m rifle prone on August 12 at 10pm; and 50m rifle three-position on August 14 at 10pm.

Sampson, who went to Lowood State High School, placed 48th in the 50m prone and 37th in the 50m three-position in London.
