A bar, restaurant and “occasional’’ market has been mooted for an old warehouse site a stone’s throw from the popular Milton Markets.
Clare Cribb Pty Ltd submitted a development application last week for the urban renewal project at 32 Cribb St, on the same street as the Milton Markets.
The site has a current approval, granted in 2016, for a 23-29 storey unit tower.
Council had previously approved a two-tower, 260 unit project which never went ahead.
At the moment there are two ageing warehouses on the site, one of which was leased by QBuild. The other is still used as a gym.
The property is also near a strip of cafes, bars and restaurants next to Milton train station and is close to Suncorp Stadium.
Thousands of sports fans currently troop up the hill to Caxton St for post-match drinks and dinner.
Planners Urban Strategies said noise from the proposed market and restaurant veranda were not a problem at the moment, as the site was surrounded by light industrial businesses.
But the market and veranda would have to be limited to daylight hours when expected residential development went ahead nearby.
“The proposal seeks to repurpose the existing two-storey warehouse buildings to establish a new function facility, bar, restaurant and marketplace,’’ Urban Strategies said in the development application (DA).
“The existing hardstand (concreted) carparking on the site is sought to be used as a temporary market place, at times.
“The warehouse facade will require aesthetic improvements to the building and provide a modernised appearance.
“As this area of Milton is in the process of urban renewal, it is possible that residential uses
would emerge nearby (and in that event) ... use of the restaurant veranda is to be limited to between 7am-10pm, and the outdoor market is to be limited to between 7am-6pm. ‘’
Designed by Red Door Architecture, the project would take place in two stages.
The bar would occupy two levels, there would be an upstairs office, kitchen, two-level function room and food outlet.
Temporary market stalls would be set up, from time to time, in a laneway.
“The proposed development provides for the activation of a prominent site in Milton,’’ Urban Strategies said.
“The proposal includes a variety of uses that will activate the site at different times of the day and improve the visual aesthetics of the area.
