The electorate of Maiwar was only created in 2017, an almagamation of the former seats of Indooroopilly and Mt Coot-Tha, yet it made history in its first year by electing the first ever Greens member to the Queensland Parliament.
This year, former community legal centre lawyer Michael Berkman is looking to cement the Greens’ toehold in parliament as he fends off strong challenges from broadcast journalist Lauren Day for the LNP and social worker Palani Thevar for Labor.

Mr Berkman’s historic victory was achieved when he pipped 2017 Labor candidate Ali King into second position by about 150 votes, thus gobbling up her second preferences to leapfrog LNP MP Scott Emerson, who has since gone on to a career in media.
Can Mr Berkman repeat the magic this year?
He and Ms Day went head-to-head in tonight’s livestream debate, with Mr Thevar unfortunately unable to make it.
