Work has started on the state’s newest primary school in a burgeoning suburb south of Brisbane where the population of 8000 is expected to balloon to 80,000 by 2040.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk visited the site at Greenbank in Logan this morning to inspect the $73 million project, one of three new schools being built this year.
Others will be built at Caloundra South and Coomera also by construction company FKG, which has completed four schools which opened on the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast last month.
In stage one, the Greenbank school, which will service the North Maclean area, will cater to around 700 students but will have a total capacity for 1400 students.
Students in Prep to Year 6 will walk through the school gates in January 2022 with an admin block, library, multipurpose hall, oval, playgrounds and classrooms.
The area is projected to be Queensland’s second fastest growing between now and 2041 with 145 residential building approvals in the December quarter, up 12.4 per cent compared to the September quarter when there were 129.
State government projections tip a 10-fold increase for the Greenbank population over the 25 years to 2041 from about 7700 at the 2016 census to 84,400.
Ms Palaszczuk said the school was an “absolutely vital” part of reconstructing the economy
“No government in Queensland’s history has invested more in our schools,” she said.
“This is a historic day for the Greenbank community.”
Logan MP Linus Power said it was a high-growth part of southeast Queensland with hundreds of families moving into the new Everleigh housing development.
Mirvac Queensland residential manager Warwick Bible said the Everleigh estate would have about 750 residents by the start of the 2022 school year and 3000 when the school bell rings in early 2026.
