RUGBY League great Cameron Smith is a strong frontrunner for becoming the next bronze statue outside Suncorp Stadium after an extra push to get him across the line.
A petition has been started by Woodridge MP Cameron Dick to boost support for Smith.
It follows Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk urging Queenslanders to voice their views on which player great should be immortalised in bronze outside the stadium — Smith, Johnathan Thurston, or Allan Langer.
In a speech to the parliament last Thursday, Mr Dick said Smith, who announced his retirement from representative rugby league football this week, was the obvious choice.
“When you look at the statistics, Cameron Smith wins hands down,” Mr Dick said.
Mr Dick said Smith, who grew up in Marsden and began his footballing career at Logan Brothers Rugby League Club, is one of the “greatest big match players” the games has ever seen.
“Not only is he a great footballer, but he has been an outstanding Origin captain and he leads by example,” he said.
The petition is open until July 13, just after the third State of Origin Game which is being held at Suncorp Stadium on July 11.
Thurston immortalised in bronze
On Smith’s retirement, Ms Palaszczuk said Smith’s departure was a “blow” for Queensland, but she was confident there would be another player to fill the void.
