The state’s youngest councillor could rise to become Logan city’s next Treasurer after the shock resignation of long-serving councillor Lisa Bradley from the post on Wednesday.
Cr Jacob Heremaia, who turns 21 on the weekend, was given high praise from mayor Darren Power at Wednesday’s council meeting at which Cr Bradley resigned as chair of the committee.
Cr Bradley cited a range of reasons which included her disillusionment with party politics at the local government level.
Speculation mounted overnight over whether Cr Heremaia, who already chairs the newly created Procurement committee, would win the position.
Deputy mayor Jon Raven, a member of the Labor Party, already holds the position of chairman of the Planning committee.
Labor Party member Teresa Lane is chairman of the Infrastructure committee and Cr Laurie Koranski, one of the four councillors to be re-elected after the entire council was dismissed, chairs the Lifestyle committee.
Cr Power told the meeting Cr Heremaia had been in hospital this week after being bitten by a dog and was “not slacking off”.
“He’s got the stitches to prove it — so anyone who thought worse of Cr Heremaia, should be ashamed of themselves,” he said.
“But I would also like to point out that Cr Heremaia is 21 on Sunday – so congratulations Cr Heremaia, I believe you are the first ever councillor to have their 21st while in office and well done for that — I can’t believe that you’re only 21 it’s unbelievable.”
Cr Heremaia was one of four councillors this week to vote against plans to tighten the city’s laws against “distracting” election signs being displayed on the side of the road.
The council was split down the middle over whether to allow trailers with election signs on them to be parked on the roadside and how to regulate distracting signs on roundabouts.
Acting chair of the committee Cr Natalie Willcocks used her casting vote to knock back tightening the laws.
Cr Heremaia’s election signs were later discussed prior to debate about a road closure at Park Ridge, the suburb where a development application was submitted for a residential and retail complex next to the Park Ridge Tavern.
The site was used by Cr Heremaia as the authorised address on his election signs.
