A 30-year-old karate practitioner busted with 17 grams cocaine – 1.8 grams of which was pure – and knuckle dusters has told a court the drugs were for his personal use.
Waterford West man Stefan Marcel Cocan copped a hefty fine at Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
Cocan pleaded guilty to possessing dangerous drugs, and possessing a Category M weapon.
Nine other charges against him were dismissed.
The court heard the defendant was on November 18 busted with 17.124 grams cocaine, which further tests confirmed was 1.822 grams pure.
Illegal knuckle dusters, growth hormone and testosterone were also found in his possession.
According to the prosecution, he claimed to police to hold a relevant licence for the weapon, but did not.
Defence solicitor Katie Wolff said her client’s cocaine stash was not for commercial purposes but purely for personal use.
As a “regular” karate practitioner Cocan incorrectly thought a “miscellaneous” licence he held entitled him to carry the knuckledusters, according to Ms Wolff.
The court heard Cocan works three days a week, cares for his terminally ill parents on two days and has no criminal history.
Magistrate Mark Howden acknowledged the defendant’s complete lack of previous criminal offending when he fined him $1,800.
No conviction was recorded.
