A road rage flare up turned hit and run, where a young driver allegedly murdered another man in Logan, has seen witnesses tell a court for the first time of the horrific scenes that unfolded.

On September 17, 2021 Umar Hussein Alkhalifa Al Enizi, the accused, allegedly got into a violent road rage encounter with Troy Edward Vandenberg outside Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Beenleigh Magistrates Court heard on Thursday, October 5 — the first of a two-day hearing into the matter — that 25-year-old Vandenberg punched and kicked at the door of 22-year-old Mr Al Enizi’s white Audi.

Witnesses saw the two men get out of their cars and start “shadow boxing” in the street before taking off again.

Vandenberg then chased Mr Al Enizi in his blue Toyota Camry through the streets until they stopped at a busy intersection in Browns Plains.

Witnesses told the court they saw Vandenberg get out of his car, pick up a hammer/mallet type instrument from his boot and hurl it towards the 22-year-old Marsden man in a verbally abusive rage.

Mr Al Enizi then allegedly deliberately mowed down Vandenberg as he was on foot and fled from the scene, leaving him dead on the road.

One witness told the court Vandenberg’s body went flying in the air and crashed into the bonnet of the car in a terrifying scene.

“It is burnt in my brain what I saw that day,” said the witness.

“I have triggers every time I hear a car screech. I just wish he drove away and left it to be, it’s tragic.”

Mr Al Enizi’s white Audi was allegedly damaged with a smashed windscreen and he sped off on the wrong side of the road.

An ambulance arrived at the scene and several onlookers offered assistance but Vandenberg died from the collision.

Mr Enizi was charged with murder, driver failing to remain at incident and exhibit proper respect to deceased and driving without a licence.

The matter was dealt with in a hearing in Beenleigh Magistrates Court where Mr Enizi’s legal team will argue the case for murder is not strong and that he may have acted in self defence.

The hearing is due to continue today.
