Trio rescues disabled driver after car floats away outside Eagle Tavern

Three men have waded into waist-deep water to rescue a disabled driver in his new car from a flooded road south of Brisbane. WATCH THE DRAMATIC RESCUE

A disabled Eagleby man was lucky to escape without serious injuries after driving his new, four-door hatchback into flooded water outside the Eagle Tavern on Fryar Rd at Eagleby early this morning.

The area, part of Logan, was subject to an emergency flooding alert this morning.

Three witnesses from a house nearby rushed to his rescue, wading into waist-deep water to push the floating Volvo and its driver to safety.

One of the men, structural designer draughtsman Travis Geddes, said he was shocked when he saw the car plunge into the 1.5m flood waters.

But he convinced his two friends to help the man.

“We could see that he was disabled because of the sticker on his car and I said to the boys, ‘let’s just dive in and get him’,” he said.
“We dragged his car to the shallowest part of the water and then I opened the door and the water just gushed inside the brand-new car.

“The man was visibly shaken and panicking and we helped him to the side of the road but his car sank and the water is now above the roof.

“We walked him part of the way home as lives around the corner.”

Robert Dean and manager of the Acacia Waters Complex Stewart also helped in the rescue.

Mr Geddes said the new car was a write-off.

The force of the water swivelled the car around but the three men were able to turn the vehicle back the right way and float it to the side of the road.

Police have told drivers not to enter flooded roads with fines of up to $551.
