The heavily pregnant woman whose partner died trying to shield her from a horror caravan fire, will watch her partner’s funeral from her hospital bed after suffering burns to over 50 per cent of her body.
Tomeka Willis opened her eyes for the first time on Wednesday March 30 around 6pm, after being in an induced coma for over a week.
Her partner Blake Whell, 22, passed away in hospital about noon on Tuesday March 22, after the caravan he was staying in with Ms Willis caught alight and exploded in Logan Central about 11pm on Monday night, March 21.
The fire is believed to have been started by an E-Scooter charger.
Ms Willis was 35 weeks pregnant and her baby – a healthy boy – was delivered via caesarean on Tuesday afternoon March 22, Logan House Fire Support Network confirmed.
It has been confirmed Ms Willis suffered burns to over 50 per cent of her body, with the most damage being to her face and throat.
Medical experts believe she may never fully recover her voice, and that she will spend the next four to six months recovering in hospital.
Yesterday, Mr Whell’s parents visited Ms Willis in hospital to deliver the devastating news.
According to Logan House Fire Support Network Ms Willis was “devastated and distraught” to learn Mr Whell had died shielding her from the fire.
“It’s a long road to recovery for Tomeka, but she has the support of family and the best treatment available in hospital,” Louie Naumovski from Logan House Fire Support Network said.
Today at 2pm a private family funeral will be held for Mr Whell, and Ms Willis will live stream the service from her hospital bed.
Her one request was for their couple song Goodbye my Lover by James Blunt to be played at Mr Whell’s funeral.
