Sunshine Coast disabled residents terrified by drug-fuelled break and enter

The bizarre circumstances behind a grief-stricken, drug-fuelled break-in at a Sunshine Coast disabled home have been revealed in court.

Disabled residents in Sunshine Coast were left traumatised after an armed man broke into their home while drugs were hidden inside his body.

Shane Robert O’Neill, 43, from Towen Mountain, Sunshine Coast, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court to unlawfully entering premises and possession of drugs - which police found inside his rectum

The court heard that on March 1 this year, O’Neill heard news about the death of a close friend, which triggered a drug relapse.

The next day he broke into a Nambour residential facility for disabled people and stole items.

When police arrested him, a small quantity of methandienone was found inside his rectum.

The court heard O’Neill was able to be ushered out of the building and did not harm anyone.

Magistrate Peter Cooke said it was concerning that the residence was for people with disabilities.

“Scaring and distressing people with disabilities is completely acceptable,” he said.

“It’s difficult to understand what was going through your head but it does not excuse you traumatising other people.”

Magistrate Cooke said O’Neill needed to address his behaviour to avoid further offending.

“Your previous history is absolutely shocking and I acknowledge your particularly dysfunctional background.

“Unless you want the rest of your life to be miserable, you need to change the way you’re doing things.”

O’Neill was sentenced to two years in prison with an immediate parole release date.
