Students and families of major southside schools have been offered counselling after a Logan high school teacher was charged with rape and grooming a child under 16.
Marsden State High School maths teacher Jason Lee was charged with two counts of rape, and one count of grooming a child under 16 after an investigation by the Wynnum Child Protection and Investigation Unit.
Mr Lee, 29, was stood down from his role after he was arrested and taken into custody after officers executed a search warrant at his Underwood home on July 11.
He has been released on bail and is due in Wynnum Magistrates Court later this month.
It will be alleged that Mr Lee dressed to pose as a teen to chat to teen girls who he lavished with praise over weeks before asking them to send him photos of themselves naked via online platforms including Snapchat.
It will also be alleged he gained the girls’ trust by leading them to believe he was a slightly older boy who found them attractive before encouraging them to send compromising, provocative photos of themselves.
Education Department officials said they had been in regular contact with students and their families about the teacher’s arrest.
Parents from one school said they wanted school programs to promote greater awareness of the dangers of giving out personal details over the phone.
The Education Department said it was also supporting the police investigation and was providing ongoing support to the affected school community.
Counselling and guidance services are available to anyone requiring support.
No further details about the school can be provided at this time.
The department said it was unable to comment further on matters before the courts.
