Karne Young designed the jumper for his teammates to be worn in the indigenous round clash that aimed to also emphasis the Healthy Choices program.

Young, a proud indigenous man, said he had to work around St Mary’s traditional blue and white stripes.

MATCHES TO BE LIVESTREAMED

“The shirt overall means warrior,’’ Young said.

“That is our way of saying we are strong as one, that we will always be together as one.

“With colours, I went for a sunset background so show we shine even during the lowest part of the sun no matter what.’’

Young said it was fantastic the Marsden-St Mary’s Langer Cup round recognised the indigenous past of the region.

Kenny Hill, an ambassador for the Healthy Choices program, said the point he would like to get across to the indigenous community associated with Marsden and St Mary’s was to get 715 health checks completed. “This means they are taking control of their own health,’’ Hill said.

Young’s classmate Samual Elara said St Mary’s had gained confidence from a narrow loss to the powerhouse Palm beach Currumbin in the last round and would take that into the clash against Marsden.

“Last game we fell one try short of Palm Beach Currumbin who are the national champions,’’ Elara said.

“We had them at home and the boys did put a lot of pressure on them.

“To come up one try short was not too bad.

“We did get a lot of confidence from the Palm Beach game. They are the best team in Australia and to come one try short is a big effort from the boys.

LANGER CUP PLAYERS PROUD OF PAST

Marsden SHS Indigenous jersey designer was year 10 student Tia Sanders.

“We had just finished a project where our totems were painted on to the ground outside our Deadly@Marsden room, and so I used some of the same thinking for the jersey with the goanna playing an important part, along with our partners at Deadly Choices, the FOGs and Broncos,’’ Sanders explained.

“Mr Hartigan ran a competition where all students were able to submit a design. Mine was chosen from that.”

Sanders said it was special to have his design chosen.

“It makes me really excited to see my art being shown to such a large audience.

“I’ve been able to meet Dane Gagai and Will Chambers through the FOGs and to have them see my design is amazing.

“It will be such a thrill to see our teams run out in the jersey on Tuesday. It is so good to see our culture represented across our school and the way other students are really excited to celebrate it too.’’

Elara said he would like to see improved second half performances.

“We are there and in the fight, but we just need to hold it for the whole 60 minutes.’’

Marsden SHS coach Jesse Maclean said he wanted to improve on little aspects of play.

“We are looking to improve on our first half start against St Marys,’’ Maclean said.

“We are dealing with a couple of injuries to key players out of the state carnival in Roma which has resulted in a couple of younger players getting an opportunity against St Marys which is exciting for them and their families.

“We continue to try and improve on one per cent areas in defence which we know count against a team like St Marys with a very big touch middle and flashy outside backs.’’
