SPEED limits on two major Logan roads will drop this month, after the state government announced tighter safety measures for motorists following two deaths from head-on collisions on the weekend.
Speed limits will drop on Waterford — Tamborine Rd from 100km/h to 80km/h from south of Dairy Creek Rd to Stegemann Rd at Waterford.
They will be reduced from 90km/h to 80km/h from Hotz Rd to north of Camp Cable Rd to Yarrabilba Road at Yarrabilba.
in Beaudesert, speeds will drop from 60km/h to 50km/h from the intersection of Brisbane St at Telemon St and from William St to Tina St.
Speeds will increase from 60km/h to 70km/h from Wonglepong to the Mundoolun Connection Rd.
Transport Minister Mark Bailey said the new speed limits were in response to community concern and to improve safety.
‘‘We have listened to community feedback and will rollout changes to sections of Tallebudgera Creek Road, Beaudesert-Nerang Road, Ipswich-Boonah Road, Waterford-Tamborine Road and the Mount Lindesay Highway,’’ Mr Bailey said.
The move was criticised by state Opposition leader Deb Frecklington who called on Mr Bailey to “permanently rule out” reducing the speed limit on the M1.
Mr Frecklington said cutting the speed limits on the M1 would only add to congestion on that road.
A government review looked at crash history, traffic volumes, types of vehicles, geography and the road network.
Findings were presented to the local speed management committee which consists of representatives from TMR, Queensland Police Service, RACQ and councils, including Logan.
Members of the committee considered findings, community feedback and made the decisions on speed limit changes at each location.
Outside Logan, the speed limit on Tallebudgera Creek Rd will be reduced from 60km/h to 50km/h from Loman Lane to south of the Pacific Motorway overpass of Tallebudgera Creek Road, Burleigh Heads.
Ipswich Boonah Road: Speed limit increase from 80km/h to 100km/h (northbound direction only) from north of Mollenhauers Road/Dwyers Road to Mollenhauers Road, Peak Crossing.
Speed limit decreases from 70km/h to 60km/h within the locality of Witheren to west of the J Hinze Bridge.
Speed limit decreases from 70km/h to 60km/h from Billabirra Crescent to Oak Street, Nerang.
Mount Lindesay Highway: Speed limit drops from 60km/h to 50km/h from north of Birnam Street to the Beaudesert-Nerang Road/Telemon Street/William Street intersection, Beaudesert.
