The Underwood resident earned a place at the trials after shining at the state titles.

Competing in the 15 years age group, Day was a silver medallist in the 1500m, a bronze medallist in both the 400m and 800m freestyle and a finalist in the hotly contested 200m final. Along the way she produced an Olympic qualifying time.

That achievement caps a grand four months for Day, a St Thomas More College student, who in September represented Queensland.

“I’m super excited to have qualified for the Olympic trials this year,’’ Day said.

“After racing at an open event in Melbourne at the Australian Short Course Championships in October last year I’m really looking forward to racing some of my idols again.

“I definitely wouldn’t have achieved this without my coaches Lachlan Staples and Isaac Foote inspiring and motivating me to train hard day in day out.’’

While Day was a shining light for Southside Aquatic, there were a host of other striking performers from Lachlan Staples-coached swimmers at the state titles.

Amadika Atkinson picked up the club’s first individual medal at the meet in the 100m backstroke and was fourth in the 100m butterfly.

Tarryn House was fifth in the 200m individual medley and sixth in both the 200m and 400m freestyle.

There was more finals experience for Chloe Mack (fifth in 200m breaststroke and fourth in the 100m breaststroke), Holli Gladman (fifth, 100m breaststroke) and Harrison Back who was sixth in the gruelling 1500m and eighth in the 800m freestyle.

Dylan Wilson (100m and 200m breaststroke) was fourth in two events and Mia Marks fourth in her event, the 200m butterfly.
