Souths Logan rugby league junior Cruise Ten reflects on Magpies training move to Marsden SHS

Souths Logan Magpies junior Cruise Ten has reflected on his life at Marsden State High School and Magpies decision to move its training base to the Logan City school.

It was a Monday afternoon, the week of Schoolies celebrations, and year 12 school leaver Cruise Ten was back at Marsden State High School wearing his uniform.

Cruise had responded to a request from Marsden SHS principal Andrew Peach to return to promote the recent announcement that Souths Logan would be using Marsden SHS has its main training base for this season and beyond.

His peers might have been scattered around south east Queensland celebrating the end of their school life, but Cruise’s appearance spoke volumes for the respect he had for the Marsden SHS uniform and also his principal and coach, Andrew Peach.

“I started here in grade eight and went all the way to grade 12 so it is a big part of what I have done,’’ Ten said.

He said he owed Marsden SHS a lot for the competitive rugby league environment which developed into the player he is today.

“From year 8 to 10 it was all about an environment of excellence,’’ Cruise said.

“If I would have gone to another school it would not have been as competitive.

“I was playing with and against the best, Tesi (Nui), the David Fifta’s and playing these guys was eye opening and always pushing me to improve.

“Then in years 11 and 12, Mr O and Mr Carapeto came in and it really helped my training out and getting my focus going.’’

Cruise is one of many Logan City-based league players who will benefit from Souths Logan’s decision to base training at Marsden.

While Souths Logan retaining Davies Park at West End as its match day facility and for Friday sessions, most training will be at Marsden.

Cruise Ten when he was at Waterford West State School has a child, He was visited by Titans player William Zillman.

Rather than have to travel from Logan to inner Brisbane’s West End, the likes of Ten can now train locally.

Cruise said going to a school which had seen the likes of Irsael Folau, Cameron Smith, Antonio Winterstein and Jaydn Su’a come through was also inspiring.
