A LOGAN strawberry farm will be neighbours to the state’s newest sewage treatment plant, which will be built at Chambers Flat.

Logan City Council yesterday broke its silence on the address of the sewerage plant, pinpointing 40ha of land running down to the Logan River on Pleasant View Rd, less than 1km from the Chambers Flat Strawberry Farm.

The address was one of two short-listed in November and decided on by a council vote on April 17.

But the location was kept a secret from the public while council negotiated with the owners over the multimillion-dollar price.

A couple in their 70s owns the land, but it is not known whether they will be allowed to remain on site once the plant is built.

SEWAGE SITE TOP SECRET

Last month, council said the first stage of the $50 million plant, to be built by Economic Development Queensland, had to be completed before the city’s Loganholme facility hit capacity in 2021.

Hours after Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe dissolved the council, a statement said there was no firm construction schedule but it was likely the plant would be required sometime after 2021.

Council said the site, in the middle of farming and grazing land, was chosen because it does not flood and was close to the river.

It is also close to high-growth areas of Park Ridge, Logan Village and Yarrabilba, which will need their own sewerage plant. The proposed plant will cater for up to 172,000 residents.

Weeks before the council was dissolved, water chairman Phil Pidgeon said it was expected the treated effluent from the new plant would be dumped into the Logan River.

“The effluent will be treated and some will be recycled to possibly be used for irrigation,” Cr Pidgeon said.

Council said the plant would produce treated wastewater (effluent) in line with government strict environmental permit requirements. It said the effluent would be suitable for discharging into the Logan River.

Last year, the Strawberry Farm expressed interest in using treated water from the sewerage plant.

Council will hold a community information event on Saturday, June 15, at Chambers

Flat and Logan Reserve Community Centre from 9am to noon.
