Two young men have appeared in court accused of attempting to rob someone while armed with a gun and knife outside a popular mosque in Underwood on Sunday.

Co-accused Rudha Ali Al-Rubaye, 19, from Inala and Amir Mohammadi, 20, Woodridge appeared in custody at Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Tuesday over an alleged attempted armed robbery outside a mosque in Underwood on April 25.

Police prosecutor Tahlia Boettcher described the alleged incident in court as a “brazen attack at night”.

The court heard Mr Al-Rubaye allegedly pulled out a black handgun and pointed it at someone’s head while outside the mosque on Paramatta Rd at about 1.30am.

Magistrate Terry Duroux said Mr Al-Rubaye seems to have escalated what allegedly occurred before Mr Mohammadi allegedly got involved and pulled out a knife and placed it to the throat of the alleged victim.

Magistrate Duroux said he found the allegations “particularly concerning.”

The men have both been charged with attempted robbery, going armed to cause fear, possession of a knife in a public place and two counts of common assault.

The court heard the pair intended to contest the charges and made applications for bail in court.

Mr Al-Rubaye’s lawyer said her client contests the charges but acknowledged he was at the mosque that day.

She said her client had no criminal history, was employed part-time as a barber, was studying for a bachelor of design at Griffith University and helped to take care of his sick mother at home.

Mr Mohammadi’s lawyer said her client also contested the charges.

She said he was employed at Real Pet Food in Ormeau and studying for a diploma in nursing.

Magistrate Duroux denied both of their applications for bail due to an unacceptable risk of committing further offences and had them remanded in custody. Both of their matters were adjourned for mention on May 17.
