In Logan, the Beenleigh Rum Distillery will start making hand sanitiser for state government schools and transport workers.

Beenleigh Rum, Australia’s oldest distillery, will start production this week and has done a deal to supply the state’s frontline workers and schools.

Angelo Kotses, managing director of the Bickfords Group, which owns the Beenleigh Distillery, said the idea came from the need to keep workers safe.

“Ethanol is the key ingredient of hand sanitiser, and we already produce ethanol for our alcohol products,” Mr Kotses said.

“We originally planned a small run of only 1500 cartons, but when the Queensland Government approached us, we were more than happy to help.”

Staff at the Coffee Club at Browns Plains have also been making up special Care Kits for those who have had to be quarantined, the elderly or those who cannot get out to the shops.

Coffee Club chief executive chief executive Nick Bryden said the kits were a way of helping those in need.

“We know that many Australians are finding it difficult to buy essentials that are in high demand,” he said.

“With many people vulnerable and self-isolating across the country, we’ve worked with our partners to find a way to deliver these essential care packs straight to people’s door.

“As more Australian workplaces roll out remote working arrangements, The Coffee Club will also help people ‘caffeinate while they isolate’.

“Our delivery solution makes sure those working from home don’t need to forego their daily coffee.

“The Coffee Club will continue to operate and our greatest priority is that our guests and team are safe and secure.”

Coffee Club meals including all-day breakfasts are available through takeaway or delivery with Uber Eats.

The Care Kits are available to order through the Uber Eats app from most The Coffee Club cafes across the country with costs starting from $8 for a standard loaf of bread, plus a carton of milk.

Coffees, cake and other menu items can be added as extras.
