IMAGINE moving to another country when you are 13-years-old and having to make new friends, start school, assimilate all while learning the language.

It’s a tough gig. But Mabel Park State High School principal Michael Hornby has done everything in his power to make that move into Australian life easier for students at his school.

After becoming principal of the school two years ago, he set up an office space for Access Community Services Limited so the group can support refugee students’ transition into the school system. The forward-thinking teacher also established a United Cultural Centre for parents and students.

His efforts were rewarded this week, when he stood in front of a crowd of more than 200 to collect a state Multicultural Award for an individual over the age of 25. His popularity was evident when he took out the top prize from more than 100 nominations.

Part of the award also acknowledged his move to create a “cultural precinct” and “yarning circles” around the school to help with cultural understanding and to symbolise the importance of diversity. He also took unprecedented steps to receive more English-as-a-second-language teachers and aides. “Not only do we have great teachers but students who want to learn and be the best. They come with a range of backgrounds and stories. It’s great to be a part of.” He even added a high performance sports program including soccer, rugby league, netball and basketball.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Grace Grace said Mr Hornby’s actions made students from all cultures feel welcome, inclusive and safe at Mabel Park.

“He has created a sense of belonging which has reduced stress and made the settlement journey more enjoyable for students and their families.
