Plans to rebuild Trading Post servo, despite flood questions

Plans to bring back to life the iconic southside landmark The Trading Post are under way.

PLANS to bring back to life the iconic southside landmark The Trading Post are under way.

The popular service station and shop was known for its hamburgers and as the last stop for cigarettes and petrol for motorists driving into Brisbane in the 1960s.

It also became a popular trading spot for those selling cars and was the main post office collection point for the area in the 1970s.

The store, on Beenleigh Redland Bay Rd at Loganholme, was knocked down in 2014 when plans to rebuild on the site were first mooted.

Since then, the land has been left vacant until earthworks to fill in the block started in October.

Last week, earthworks for the 18,618 sqm site and 1400sq m local shopping centre were questioned at a Logan City Council roads and water committee meeting.

Cr Darren Power said he was concerned Logan’s planning scheme allowed developers to fill in land without consulting neighbours.

“My concern is that residents in that area of flood-prone land, don’t want to see the water flow in the area getting any worse,” he said.

“Some of these houses were built before 1974 and are on flood land and others are very close to flood land.

“They question why this is allowed when it may have an impact on their own land.”

According to the plans, council granted preliminary approval with conditions for a service station and shopping centre on the site in 2010.

That was extended in 2014 with the development application expiring in December 2018.

No further extension was granted and after an updated application in June last year, developer Osa Holdings proceeded to build up the site, which is on a flood plain less than 2km from the Logan River.

Loganholme resident Steve Rowland said he had no problem with resurrecting the iconic servo but objected to building up the site with landfill.

“I don’t believe the assessment for this work was done using all of the overland flooding criteria,” Mr Rowland said.

“I believe the council has assessed the risk of riverine flooding, which is flooding when the river bursts its banks, and found that my property was unlikely to be affected.

Properties upstream of a river are affected by overland flooding when water flowing into a river banks up.

Mr Rowland said he feared that could happen at his property, in nearby Torres St, if there was a deluge of water flowing into the river system from Bryants Rd,

The matter is still before Logan City Council.

Other issues raised by the council included the need for additional car parks to meet standards; consideration of koala zonings; and the necessity for the shopping centre.

Within 1km, there are two petrol stations and shops on Beenleigh Redland Bay Rd and plans for another.

Also nearby are shops at Logan Hyperdome; Bismarck St; the new Woolworths on Bryants Rd and at the two servos.
