Phillip Charles Jenkie, 34, of Eagleby sentenced on 31 charges

“You are an absolute disgrace”: A court has heard an ATM, shopkeeper, service station and Woollies were all “unsafe” from the criminal advances of a meth-maligned truck driver.

The surprising history of meth

A 34-year-old father-of-two who went on a wilful damage and stealing spree over months, has been blasted as “an absolute disgrace” after his drug-induced offending culminated with stripping naked twice at a country pub.

Appearing at Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Wednesday (June 6) Phillip Charles Jenkie of Eagleby pleaded guilty to 31 charges.

They included stealing, wilful damage, indecent exposure, causing a public nuisance, going armed so as to cause fear, and possession of dangerous drugs and drug utensils.

The court heard between July 10, 2021 to April 3 the truck driver committed a slew of offences ranging between Eagleby, Beenleigh, Ashmore, Helens Vale, Stapleton, Shailer Park and Dalby.

According to police, he caused an estimated $10,000 damage to an ATM machine, damaged a vehicle’s side mirror, stole from Woolworths and “showed a complete disregard to the community”.

But it was his behaviour at the Criterion Hotel on July 10 last year that drew condemnation from the bench.

The court heard he twice stripped naked, exposed his genitalia and broke numerous drinking glasses that caused such a scene police were called.

A previous “serious” prison sentence for a domestic violence-related assault occasioning bodily harm offence, did him little favour.

Defence solicitor David Gilmore said a methamphetamine addiction started in 2018 drove much of the father-of-two’s misery.

Mr Gilmore submitted the court ought not accept that a total $10,000 damage was caused to the ATM, after police could not provide an exact quote.

The defence acknowledged their client’s significant number of serious charges but couched them as being toward the lower end of the scale for their type.

Jenkie had spent 94 days in pre-sentence custody and would live with a friend in Eagleby upon release, the court heard.

An attempt by the defendant to explain his behaviour as occurring during a rough patch was denounced by magistrate Pamela Dowse.

“What good would you be to any children?” Ms Dowse asked.

“Someone who goes to a hotel and takes all their clothes off. It happened twice.

“Rubbish, rubbish. You are nothing but a nuisance. A shopkeeper isn’t safe, a service station isn’t safe, the ATM is not safe.

“You are an absolute disgrace.”

With 94 days in pre-sentence custody declared time served, Jenkie was sentenced to a total nine months’ imprisonment and granted immediate parole release.

Convictions were recorded.
