New on-ramps wreak havoc on Logan Motorway at Illaweena St

THE Mt Lindesay Highway and Logan Motorway merge was shaping to be another major road disaster this morning.
Commuters endured snarls for more than 2 hours on the motorway yesterday when the new Mount Lindesay Highway northbound overpass to the Logan Motorway eastbound opened and the old off-ramp was closed.
Commuters were jammed at the turn into the notorious Illaweena St with cars backed up for more than 2km to the Logan Motorway.
It was the same road where a massive concrete pillar crumbled in December, closing the road.
Many of those caught in the snarls yesterday had missed the new exit and were doing illegal U-turns to get back to the Logan Motorway turn-off.
For those heading to the Gateway Motorway from the Logan Motorway, you need to take the Wembley Rd turn-off.
Motorists trying to get on to the Gateway have been warned to look for the new signs.
The new bridge over Logan Motorway is off to the right if you’re coming from the Mt Lindesay Highway.
Those who want to get on to the Logan Motorway eastbound, that exit is on the right as you go under Beaudesert Rd.
For years, the road has been a major choke point because of the poorly designed interchange but the new ramps, once completed will change that.
However, until the road works are finalised motorists have been warned about the traffic jams.
From Friday, the Logan Motorway westbound off ramp to Beaudesert Rd northbound will be temporarily closed.
