A mouth watering local derby will be played between Park Ridge and Beenleigh on Saturday for the right to see who qualifies first for the 2018 QFA Division 2 grand final.
The Pirates will host the clash at Park Ridge State High School from 2pm after Beenleigh upset Bond University 9-11-65 to 12-11-83.
As minor premiers Park Ridge had last weekend off, but that did not stop the Park Ridge brains trust observing Beenleigh’s gallant victory.
Pirates coach Graham Adams said he wanted his side to start better in the finals.
“We have not been good in that area and it is something we have to do better,’’ Adams said.
Park Ridge have beaten Beenleigh on both occasions this season, but Beenleigh have been the competition’s big improvers across the months.
Against Bond, Beenleigh won a knife-edge final term when Kade Luck, Sean Goode and a boundary snap from Ryan Birnie from more than 50m out gave their side the winning margin.
“Defence was the key in keeping Bond goalless in the last,’’ said Beenleigh club president Mick Jordan.
“There were times when the opposition could of taken the game away from us but as the old saying goes “ judge people when things are hard not when it’s easy”.
Goode was best on the ground in a match which saw 17-year-old Declyn Eddy get his chance in the seniors.
The first quarter could not have started of better for Beenleigh, with a goal in the first minute of the game, but as the quarter wore on Bond took control and led by three goals.
Bond extended their advantage in the second term before a few positional changes sparked Beenleigh into action.
“The boys fought back to only being four points in front at half time,’’ Jordan said.
“It was a great confidence lift.’’
The third was a tight contest, with both team having good passages of play.’’
Jordan said Saturday’s match would be an “exciting challenge for this young group of mates’’.
