A local snake catcher has relocated one of the biggest pythons he’s ever seen, after it honed in on a Scenic Rim family’s chickens.

Glenn ‘Ozzie’ Lawrence, of OzCapture snake relocations, said he got a call about the monster python on Sunday morning.

“A call-out to Kooralbyn for what was described as a big python honing in on the customers free range chickens,” he said.

“Sometimes you get customers who say it’s huge and you arrive and it’s an average 6 feet or smaller and others times they say it’s small and you arrive to find some 2.5-3 metre long python.

“Well this customer was right on the money with this just 9 feet Coastal Carpet Python.”

Ozzie said the big girl was well over three metres long and about 10kg heavy.

“She sure was a beauty,” he said.

“She had her eyes on those chickens but by the time I got there she was up a tree.

“I’d say she’s at least ten years old. The size really depends more on how well she’s been fed too, so she could be much older than that.”

The snake was relocated in the Scenic Rim, only about a kilometre away.

“It’s such a beautiful area there and that’s why the snakes get so big and healthy,” Ozzie said.

“A really good ecosystem for them. But don’t worry, where I’ve relocated her she’s away from schools and any built up areas.”

Ozzie said in the past couple of weeks, as the weather warms up, he’s had an influx of snake relocation calls from the Scenic Rim.

“I probably had about eight jobs on each day on the weekend just gone,” he said.

“And in the past few weeks at least a few a day.

“As it warms up we’re going to see more and more.”

The snake catcher extraordinaire said his advice is to keep a first aid kit handy, and to keep an eye out for snakes.

“I preach coexistence above all else,” he said.

“They’re beautiful creatures and our ecosystem needs them. But of course I understand not wanting them near your dogs, cats, chickens, birds or children.

“So the best way to go about it is to call up your local snake catcher and leave the snake be until they get there.

“Don’t go poking them with a stick or stirring up more trouble.

“We need to learn to appreciate our snakes and do the right thing by our wildlife.”
