Meadowbrook Golf Course’s bitter feud with Logan council ramps up as construction firm builds site compound at front gate

A southside golf course operator is bracing for two years of road work hell after unsuccessfully begging a construction company and a council not to build a site compound on its doorstep.

A southside golf course operator is bracing for two years of road work hell at its front gate after a local council allowed a construction company to build a site office on public land flanking both sides of its driveway.

Logan City Council gave permission to construction company SEE Civil to build a site compound on two strips of land along the front fence of the Meadowbrook Golf Course while Loganlea Rd is being widened.

The council and the golf course operator have been in a bitter court battle after the council closed parts of the links in 2011 for nearly three years while it put down city sewer pipes under the fairways.

It is expected the construction compound will take up nearly 3500 sqm of land and remain outside the golf course for a minimum of 18 months.

Construction works include adding lanes to both sides of the council’s Loganlea Rd, which runs past Logan Hospital to the Loganlea train station.

Meadowbrook Golf Club managing director Tom Linskey said his company had begged the council not to locate the compound at the front of the golf course, which has become one of the largest wedding venues in Logan.

He said the council had not spoken to him about the new site office on his doorstep and he found out about the two-year plans from SEE Civil.

“The first time we knew the road project was happening was when we got a flyer in the letterbox in the middle of March,” Mr Linskey said.

“There has been no communication from the council about how this project might affect our business or our access and no offer of directional signage or alternative access routes.

“There has been no discussion about how our customers are expected to negotiate their way through a tangle of construction traffic outside our gates.

“We found out when the construction company came to see if they could rent land inside our boundary for their trucks and equipment.

“We considered it but declined as there is no end date and the road works will take at least two years, if not three.

“There are always time extensions which is what happened when the council wanted to put the sewer line down.

“They initially said that would be five months and there would be compensation. It took five years and we have never been compensated.”

In a letter to Logan City Council, the Golf Club said it would be strongly recommending to shareholders that action be taken against both SEE Civil and the council if the compound was built along the front fence.

Secret meeting over golf club’s $24m claim for sewer pipe chaos

Logan City Council, which signed a 90-year lease to allow the golf course operator to use the council land, was contacted for comment.

According to Logan council’s website, a community meeting outside the golf club was held on Saturday, March 4 which Mr Linskey said he had no knowledge of and had not been invited.

Five households bordering the front fence of the golf course also received the flyers and were expected to lodge complaints.

It is still unknown what hours SEE Civil will operate at the construction site.

SEE Civil was also contacted for comment.
