Breaking one record is a significant achievement, but Year 11 Marsden SHS student Lyvante Su’emai continues to set new marks in two events seemingly every time she competes on the big stage in athletics.
Su’emai last week represented Australia in the under 18s discus and shot put at the Oceania Games held in Townsville.

She, claimed a gold medal in both her events, smashing previous records with a 52.92m throw in discus and a 16.77m throw in shot put.
This was after consistently setting new records across the last 12 months.

When asked about her training, Su’emai said she focusing on improving her performance and technique. was key.
“My family and I don’t measure our throws. We try to focus more on improving our technique to throw smart and consistently,” said Su’emai, who is coached by her father.
“My dad, Mr Carapeto (my strength coach from school) and I train collaboratively so I can perform and compete at my best for competitions.
“I know that if our preparation is good leading up to the comps, then all I have to do is perform and aim for PB’s.”

She said she uses cues from her father to improve her performance. ‘
“I try to focus on cues given by dad before and during actual competition to help me execute good technique, but I also try and remember to enjoy the experience and have fun.”
