RESIDENTS’ CONCERNS ABOUT GIVING UP HOMES

The latest three maps for the six-lane Coomera Connector were officially gazetted after being approved by Transport Department’s Regional Director Paul Noonan in January.

They show a proposed 6.95km stretch of the highway through Logan, after the 38.2km Gold Coast route was released in January.

The green line shows the route of the Coomera Connector as it leaves the Gold Coast and heads north to Brisbane via Eagleby.

Macalister MP Melissa McMahon said despite the maps’ gazettal, the plans could take many years to be finalised and built.

She warned residents it was early days and said 28 landowners in Eagleby were likely to be affected with 15 houses in the suburb slated to be resumed.

“The Coomera Connector was gazetted ahead of the original timeline and I am seeking a briefing on the impacts of this on the public consultation phase, which was due to start in August,” she said.

“The Transport Department still has another 18 months of consultation and planning before it presents the proposed project to the government.

“Only then will a decision be made whether to proceed to fund a business case, which is a precursor before construction can start.”

The latest maps are for the second-last stage of the 45.15km road and show the section from Staplyton-Jacobs Well Rd near Alberton Rd, after the road heads north to cross Rotary Park Rd.

It is at that point, on Eagleby Rd, where the Coomera Connector Road splits, with one section heading north across eight acreage properties before crossing the Logan River to Carbrook, where it links up to Beenleigh-Redland Bay and Mt Cotton Rd.

Eagleby councillor Jennie Breene said she was outraged the plans were released as she was setting up a public meeting to discuss the road’s impact and federal MP Bert van Manen said he was very disappointed there had been little to no consultation.

“I believe other options are available and need to be properly investigated and if they have been explained properly to the community, why this is the proposed solution,” he said.

“I don’t believe the connection to Fryar Rd is necessary. Removing this would help protect the amenity and safety of the community particularly the schools.

“I want to see the Eagleby Wetlands protected and use this opportunity to also restore the wetlands.”

A spokesman for the Transport Department said the gazettal was done to ensure imminent development applications were not affected. Residents will be consulted when a master plan is developed.
