The rail trail, linking the quaint Logan Village to Yarrabilba, will create 16 jobs and there are plans to use it as the basis for an outdoor training program for disengaged youths.

The state will spend $2 million with the Logan City Council adding $1.25 million to build the 3.5km walking, hiking and riding trail.

The funding announcement coincided with the completion of a massive multimillion-dollar refurbishment of the historic Logan Village Hotel.

The 149-year-old pub, owned by the famous McGuire hotel family, is at one end of the track which links to the burgeoning Yarrabilba housing estate.

Pub owner Matt McGuire said the rail trail would be used by people who would drive from Brisbane for lunch at the pub and by residents at nearby Yarrabilba.

“This rural village is going to become a tourist destination with people coming for weekend lunch at the pub, which we have just done up for families and built a village playground for kids,” he said.

“The playground is like a mini village that the kids can play in and has different buildings they can imagine as a shop or country building.”

Mr McGuire said he also expected families living in Yarrabilba to ride their bikes along the trail to the pub for lunch.

The rail trail has been of special interest to community groups such as Substation 33, which runs youth programs and rebuilds and recycles computers.

It was one of three projects in Logan to received a total of $6.4 million from the state government to reboot after the coronavirus lockdown.

A further 78 jobs will be created improving Beenleigh’s streetscape and providing new pathways along Loganlea Road at Meadowbrook.

Logan mayor Darren Power said the money would go a long way and he said the swift state government response was “something I haven’t seen before in my almost 30 years in council”.

Moreton Bay Regional Council will also get COVID funding for a $1.5 million facility at the Pine Rivers BMX Club, which has been the home to nine-time world champion Tom Tucker.

Redland City Council will get $2.5 million to seal a further 8.3km of roads on the southern Moreton Bay islands.

The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail will also get funding as will the Mooloolaba foreshore, Eildon Hill Reservoir and Fairways Park.
