Drink driving: A guide to safe drinking

A Logan roofer who had consumed about a dozen beers at a mate’s place was driving himself home in the early hours of the morning when he “took his eyes off the road” to light a cigarette, causing a crash.

Bethania man Ricky Leigh Jeffery, 31, who is employed at Loganholme-based RoofSafe Solutions, pleaded guilty today in Beenleigh Magistrates Court to drink-driving and driving without due care and attention.

The court heard Jeffery’s prang occurred three weeks ago on August 15 about 3.20am at Logan St, Eagleby.

Police were called to reports of a crash at this location and when they arrived they witnessed Jeffery’s white Holden Captiva “parked sideways” across the road, partially blocking it.

Jeffery approached officers and admitted to being the driver, saying he was on his way home having consumed the aforementioned beers and had veered into a parked car when he “took his eyes off the road” to light a cigarette, labelling it a “moment of inattention”.

He returned a blood alcohol content reading of 0.063 per cent, over the general but not middle alcohol limit.

The court heard he did not leave his details with the owner of the vehicle he crashed into and is yet to hear anything from them or their insurer.

“You’re lucky you didn’t injure yourself or someone else,” Magistrate Clare Kelly told him.

He was fined $700 and disqualified for the mandatory minimum period of one month. Convictions were recorded.
