A “violent” man with his charges of violence against women spanning across three states has been granted parole after facing Beenleigh District Court.

The 37-year-old Logan tradie pleaded guilty on May 16 to two charges after bashing a door down before choking his girlfriend with his knee.

He was charged with one count of wilful damage domestic violence offence and one charge of choking suffocation domestic violence offence.

The court heard his history included convictions of breaching multiple court orders, stalking and harassment across Queensland, NSW and Victoria.

The police prosecutor said the man and his former girlfriend had been together for six months and moved in together soon after they met.

“The relationship began to sour and she sent her sons away,” the prosecutor said.

“The day of the incident on March 11, 2023, the man had been drinking and became aggressive.’’

The court heard the man told his girlfriend she would end up dead if she did not follow his instructions.

The prosecutor said he prevented her from leaving the house and she barricaded herself in the bedroom.

“He burst a hole in the door and climbed on the bed and choked her with his knee,” they said.

“She was unable to breath or speak.

“Police found her with bloodshot eyes and red marks around her neck.'’

The prosecutor asked for the man to serve two to three years of probation, with the parole date of the same day.

“The choking is of concern given that he persisted despite her attempts to get away from him,” she said.

Defence barrister Timothy Wise said the man had a troubled upbringing and had been bettering himself through education while in prison.

“He has always worked consistently but has struggled with alcohol issues, which is a factor in this offending,” Mr Wise said.

Judge Craig Chowdhury, KC, said every week he saw a defendant choking their current of former partners.

“No matter how angry you are you don’t lash out in violence, it doesn’t matter if you’ve been drinking or not,” Judge Chowdhury said.

“Hopefully you wise up and work hard.’’

He sentenced the man to two years’ parole, with 251 days in pre-sentence custody considered time already served.

Convictions were recorded.
