A man with Asperger’s syndrome and brain cancer was beaten in an unprovoked attack by a gang of teens in Logan, who punched and stomped him while he was crying.

Beenleigh District Court heard on February 13 that Billie Jai Thorp, 19, and two other men punched the disabled man in the head in Beenleigh on April 6 last year.

They then stomped on him while he was crying and the victim yelled out “why are you attacking a disabled person?”

The Mudgeeraba teen pleaded guilty to robbery in company with violence and attempted robbery, as he stole another man’s scooter on the same day.

The court heard that victim was riding a scooter across a bridge in Beenleigh towards a Woolworths supermarket when Thorp and two others punched and kicked him before demanding his scooter.

Thorp ran away from police but was found hiding in bushes.

Police prosecution said it was an “unprovoked attack on members of the community.”

The court heard Thorp moved to Queensland from Western Australia as a child.

Judge Craig Chowdhury warned one punch on a person could have life-altering consequences.

“Plenty of people have died from just one punch. You could have easily killed them,” he said.

“You were part of a gang of offenders.”

Thorp was sentenced to 18 months’ probation, after serving 126 days of pre-sentence custody.

A conviction was recorded.
