Police are still checking CCTV footage of the incident, which happened in a car park on the hospital grounds.

The hospital’s 24-hour Safety and Response team attended when it was reported and police notified immediately.

Police said it was a gang of thieves operatring in the car park with and they tried to access as many as 19 cars, damaging some and stealing cash, cigarettes, phone chargers and sunglasses from others.

“The real cost to the victims will be the time and money to repair the damage caused during the break-ins, which included at least one smashed window,” police said.

“Police are disgusted that thieves would target vehicles parked at a hospital and affect those who are most likely already suffering from an illness or are staff working hard to help patients.”

Ms Cridland said many of the damaged cars were owned by staff who had taken on extra night shifts to ease the burden on the hospital under pressure as the coronavirus spreads.

“The safety of our patients, visitors and staff at Logan Hospital, no matter what time of day, is of the utmost importance,” she said.

“A number of cars were damaged and items stolen in the Logan Hospital car park overnight and it is extremely disappointing that this has happened to our staff and visitors.

“I’d like to thank our dedicated staff who continue to work hard to provide high-quality healthcare for our community when they need it.”

Hospital staff member Kristin Ridley helped raise the alarm after she found her car, pictured, smashed after finishing her shift.

Logan Hospital has 24-hour onsite security guards who wear body cameras and there are CCTV cameras in the hospital and staff car park.

There are also security escorts for staff heading to key car parks near the hospital buildings, and parking on campus for night shift staff.
