Logan footy player Travis Tupaea caught with drugs, pipe and seeds

Police put out a warrant for a Logan footy player’s arrest after making a worrying find at his home.

Australia's Court System

A Logan football player has faced court on multiple charges as a result of police conducting an extensive search of his property.

Travis Tupaea, 27, of Greenbank, this week pleaded guilty to three drug charges at Beaudesert Magistrates Court.

The court heard on October 20 last year police found cannabis, a cone piece, a bowl, seeds, and a water pipe at his house.

Police Prosecutor Senior Constable Andrew Bjerring told the court Tupaea did not have any previous criminal history.

“Police attended the address with a search warrant,” he said.

“A search of the sheds on the property was commenced and at 6.25pm police declared a crime scene at the address.

“Police then searched the main dwelling …. and located a number of items including possessions belonging to the defendant.”

The court heard police found 2.7 grams of cannabis which belonged to Tupaea, along with six cannabis seeds.

“Police located a brass bowl containing cannabis residue and a brass cone piece,” Sen Const Bjerring said.

“On the bedside table police located a glass water pipe also containing cannabis residue.

“Police at the time attempted to locate the defendant but at the time were unable to and a warrant for his arrest was issued.”

Police eventually found Tupaea.

Tupaea told the court he was using cannabis to self-medicate following an injury relating to rugby league.

He said he was unable to sleep without easing the pain.

“It was just used as a temporary painkiller,” he said.

Magistrate Tracy Mossop told the court cannabis was in fact not a pain killer.

“It’s actually a distractant, that’s how it works in relation to alleviating pain,” she said.

“You’re going to have to go about talking to your doctor about the legal form of it (cannabis) because this is illegal.”

Ms Mossop placed Tupaea on a good behaviour order for four months.

No conviction was recorded.
