The court heard the 24-year-old was looking after his son when he became frustrated with the baby’s crying and handled him in a violent way.

“You lost your temper over a crying child,” Magistrate Gary Finger said.

“You were holding the child’s body to your back and pushing his back with your hands.”

The assault happened between a number of days, between Oct 4 and Oct 8 of 2021.

“Having a child have his ribs fractured and also the unexplained bruises on his body is just completely unacceptable,” police prosecutor Tahlia Boettcher said.

“The community denounces violence on babies.”

The man’s lawyer, Layla King, said that her client was suffering from mental issues and planned to seek medical help.

“His mental health seems to be a barrier from helping himself,” Ms King said.

“It’s something that he struggles to deal with, but he knows he needs to get help.”

His nine-month-old son was hospitalised during this time where he received treatment for a broken rib and severe bruising.

“This child was a defenceless child, 9 months old and in your care, you obviously have anger issues,” Magistrate Finger said.

“It’s just not acceptable behaviour.”

The Logan father admitted to injuring the child and was remorseful.

“He stated he believed he was the person who cause the fractures to the child rib,” Magistrate Finger said.

“You are certainly are remorseful for what you’ve done.”

The man broke bail conditions on May 5 2022, and failed to report to police authority that same day.

He was convicted, received 15 months imprisonment for the assault occasioning bodily harm, with a release date of September 9, 2022.

For the count of common assault he received nine months imprisonment, to be served currently.

For two counts of breach of bail, he received a $900 fine.

All convictions were recorded.
