LOGAN City has 66 candidates competing for mayor or one of the city’s 12 divisional seats. We asked all candidates what they will do if they win.

I shall apply proven leadership, advocacy and diplomacy to seek fair resolution of ethical and industrial matters. I bring an inclusive style of leadership with recognised crisis management and financial professional advocacy skills, academic and legal qualifications and these with community mindedness to put Logan City Council right. As a most experienced qualified professional my primary role is to establish a sound council with officers through which we shall be stabilising and rehabilitating.
STEWART FLEMING
I will foster collaboration and accountability among councillors to ensure we serve with integrity. I will focus on smarter road and public transport planning. I will create more jobs by supporting local business with Buy Local procurement and an independent economic advisory board of local businesses. I will create a peak body for sports clubs, arts and environmental groups. I will initiate a zero-waste school program to teach recycling. I will support youth, seniors, homelessness, mental health and multicultural forum.
JOHN FREEMAN
I will build a cohesive team to deliver confidence to residents that shows council to be open, transparent, accountable and ethical. I will review, question and understand the upcoming Budget. I will start the process to deliver the BUILD Project, designed to build stronger communities and deliver a visionary community-driven Community Plan. I will also develop the first Youth and Seniors policies and progress funding for community centres.
SHERRY HEATH
I will aim to create a cohesive and congruent team of councillors, working with the chief executive officer, to provide a new strategic direction for Logan.
I will work to build greater trust and transparency to improve relationships, collaboration and co-operation within Logan’s Business community. I will work with community and sporting organisations; Intra-council bodies; regional, federal and state governments; the council executive and the entire Logan community.
BEN MUSGRAVE
For too long we have had self-serving interests in council and that needs to change. The Motorists Party is about honesty, integrity and open accountable government.
The Motorists Party and the candidates do not accept financial donations, each one of us funds our own campaign. I would look to have more amenability for young families; parks, recreation areas, wildlife habitat and waterways. Create more opportunities for small business to drive the economy. Reduce the stigma that Logan has as lower class and stimulate jobs.
DARREN POWER
With 29 years of local government experience, I will work to pull this council into shape, mentoring councillors, working on big issues and the budget to find savings and recreate our Economic Development strategy. I won’t focus on overseas trips and will target interstate companies considering moving here. We need jobs. I will work with councillors to create confidence over development. Residents need more say in what happens to their neighbourhood.
BRETT RAGUSE
I will have a “team approach” to rid council of a divisive culture. Councillors will adhere to the Code of Conduct and act as a Board of Directors not individuals. Regular community meetings will be prerequisite for decisions on planning, rezoning or large financial transactions. A full review of the financial status of council and a public report of our major revenue and cost structures, will ensure that the councillors and community fully understand community priorities.
PAUL TAYLOR
I will freeze my mayoral salary and donate it to a mayor’s fund that will assist pensioners and veterans. Luxury council cars will not return under my watch and ratepayers can guarantee their hard-earned money is not wasted. Misconduct will be tackled through a Whistleblower’s hotline; removing anyone from the previous administration with the culture of looking after their “mates”. I will encourage investment and tourism so jobs and wealth are created.

If I win, I will work to improve safety, lifestyle, liveability, sustainability, city pride, while
preserving our valued environmental assets focusing on continued revitalisation of Springwood CBD and linking commercial, community and sporting facilities cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, consultation for Springwood Park masterplan, traffic and pedestrian solutions around schools, speed awareness signs, Chatswood Rd and Magellan Rd, Springwood intersection improvement. Rochedale and Priestdale roads, Rochedale South intersection upgrade with traffic lights after a business case. Optional green bin consultation and reconsider how kerbside collection is picked up.
DARRON FOOT DIVISION 1
According to LinkedIn, Darron Foot has been a resource operator with the Education Department since 2011.
He was educated in Boonah and has an interest in Information Security Careers Network and IT and information with focus on cyber security. He was a former technician at Mack trucks Australia and studied Product Design at Queensland Institute of Technology, Brisbane
JACKIE THOMPSON DIVISION 1
If I win I will thank all the voters and my family for supporting and for voting for change that we need. Community groups will be heard. I will host daytime and evening quarterly meetups to inform Division One of what the council’s proposals are.
I will also be very transparent of what division one expenditure planning will be.
I will listen to the needs of each area in Division One, as each area of South Rochedale, Springwood, Priestdale and Daisy Hill needs are very different from discussions when I visited your homes during the campaign.
JOHN DALTON, DIVISION 2
I will advocate for cost cutting methods. Aside from roads and rubbish all other works such as street trees, parks and waterways will be deemed unsatisfactory if it lacks appropriate community consultation and or if the overhead maintenance exceeds a reasonable amount per annum.
While the city continually maintains kerb and channel, I will also be highlighting and delivering council’s Corporate Access and Inclusion Plan for all levels of disabilities. I am not happy with the annual cost of the city’s electricity expenditure or the quality of lighting in Division 2. I will suggest a formal audit of each and every street, road and parks
FELIX LADU, DIVISION 2
I’m not one to make promises that I can’t keep, so I won’t. Logan is a beautiful city but, for
all its beauty, all I hear is, “I don’t feel represented”, “We don’t feel heard”, “We don’t feel valued”, and “We don’t feel involved”. So, if I win, I’ll aim to listen through more community engagements and interactions through upgrading the many parks to be more suitable for all ages. I aim to attract more local events such as Eats and Beats and markets. I want to do more for youth and youth services within the community while encouraging, engaging and getting more people excited about the future so they become more involved in their community
TERESA LANE, DIVISION 2
I will listen to concerns and ideas and work with the community to improve services council should already be providing.
I will work to secure funding for toilets in public parks and high-use areas, improve community facilities and sports clubs, create parks for children of all ages, build disabled access to public places, improve street lighting and streetscapes, try to solve hooning, install seats in high pedestrian areas, improve traffic flow around Woodridge State School. I have the knowledge and experience to get things done. For 22 years I have worked in the community, supported residents and community groups and listened and acted.

I will advocate for local business and employing locally. I will work to gain people’s trust through honesty, integrity and communication.
All too often candidates choose catchy slogans and empty promises which sadly don’t come to fruition but the time has come for this to change. I will make sure Logan remains a great place to live, work and raise family. I would like to see greater awareness of and trust in local government and their services. I will work to create solutions to common problems. My word is my honour and I pledge to work for all by creating opportunities that will be affordable and accessible to all.
REESE PRESTON-SMITH DIVISION 2
I am an independent and have lived in Division Two for 38 years and for the last three with my wife Priya.
I grew up in Woodridge in a single-parent family with two brothers. I learned life lessons from mum to stand up for what I believe, be willing to work hard, be proud for what achievements and move forward together. If I am voted in as councillor for Division Two, I promise to stand up for what the community believes in. Work hard to improve the division and Logan as a whole. The most important thing to do is to listen to the people in the community because everyone has a right to be heard.

According to Linkedin Todd Walters has been a Crane Operator with The Australian Reinforcing Company and is an overhead gantry operator and forklift driver.
He has worked loading and unloading steel trucks, wide loads, long loads, heavy, awkward loads and chemicals. He has a degree in Frontline Management Traineeship, Cert 4 in business from TAFE Qld.

DAVE BEARD, DIVISION 3
If I win I will ensure that ratepayer’s dollars will be spent in a cost-effective way by reducing financial waste, the frequency of Our Logan magazine and freezing council rates for you.
I will ensure that you will have the option of a green waste recycling bin. I will help preserve and protect our local bushland, waterways and invest in rehabilitation of habitat for koalas and wildlife. I will advocate for a second kerbside collection for you to dispose of unwanted household items. I will support local sporting clubs and further upgrades to our parks. We have a Pool Safety Education Program which needs to be expanded with more free swimming lessons.
DEVA NAIKER, DIVISION 3
I will provide leadership to make my community better, new opportunities in business, employment as well as advocating and innovation for environmental preservation. I will connect communities with better representation, transport and help to the disadvantaged and elderly.
My passion for road safety will support council’s efforts to anti social driving behaviour. I will put in place congestion management and better road networks. I will promote jobs creation, buying locally, employing local people. I will promote sporting venues to host state and national tournaments to world-class standards. I will support local tourism and business and manufacturing.
KERRY NIELSEN, DIVISION 3
If I win, I will be accountable and transparent at all times.
My decisions will be based on what residents want, not on what I personally want.

After my last election, where I lost by seven votes and was denied a recount, my desire to represent our community has only grown stronger.

JAMES REID, DIVISION 3
I will come to terms with the budget which will need to be passed on the second week after swearing in.
The new council will not have time to fully understand the budget drawn up while in caretaker mode. My second job will be contacting all P & C committees in Division 3. I also need to understand the problems and concerns of Neighbourhood Watch. After the bushfires, I want to ensure that back burning on all council bush areas is carried out. I also want a review of the topography of the city to ensure the flood maps are up to date to be better prepared. Finally, I want to see that the new council can work together, to restore ratepayers’ faith.
MINDY RUSSELL, DIVISION 3
I will work with the community to develop policies which will improve the city.
Chatting to hundreds of locals, I’m hearing that consultation processes, smarter waste management and community safety are priorities. After a decade of delivering real outcomes in Logan’s not-for-profit sector, I want to deliver solutions. As a parent, I aspire to make Logan famous for being the best city in Queensland to live and raise children in. Instead of leaving for the Gold Coast or Brisbane each weekend, we want our families to have enviable attractions, facilities and services here. This will serve to better connect our communities, as well as attract dollars into our economy.

Over the past term I prided myself on being an active and engaged Councillor drawing upon my knowledge as a small business owner and experience as a community leader to capitalise on opportunities for the Division. I listened to residents, drove positive change and stood up when it mattered. This resulted in improvements in education, health, the environment, parks, roads and community services that will serve the Division for years to come.

Kerry Menck is the branch manager at Logan Village Community Bank Branch and Jimboomba Branch.
According to Facebook, she is a former soldier at Australian Army and went to Woodridge State High School. She was Treasurer at Crestmead PCYC in 2011 and president and vice president of the Logan Country Chamber of Commerce. She has a certificate IV in frontline management.
VINCENT SAWYER DIVISION 4
My first priority is to Division 4 and what budget allocations we can get for improvements to the basics roads, rates and rubbish and the needs of ratepayers by being accessible.
With 26 years of earthmoving and 10 years as a finance broker, I will pay attention to costs, blowouts and make sure ratepayers get value for their dollar. It’s important council spending and budgets reflect community wishes

I will continue to be there when you need me. If I win, I’ll be your voice to council, I’ll fight to make sure you’re treated fairly, and I’ll work with the new mayor and council to restore trust.
Listening to people’s ideas and working with them to make our city better is the core business of a councillor. Being a councillor is about helping people. I love spending time with clubs and organisations encouraging them to dream big and helping them deliver on those plans.
LES INNES DIVISION 5
I want to serve the people of Division 5 to ensure Logan progresses without the dramas of the previous council.
Every year, the people of Logan pay their rates, but inefficiencies and poor business practices by council mean our ratepayers aren’t getting value for money. I will promote a 4-year freeze on rates and mayor/councillor salaries. I will push for honesty, transparency, community areas, parks, trees, footpaths and road maintenance

If I win I will be a champion for our community. Division 6 has lacked a councillor longer than anywhere else in Logan, and we know first-hand that bad decisions can be made without an advocate fighting for us.
I will ensure core council business services, including local infrastructure upgrades and maintenance, are delivered across all parts of Division 6.
Our community deserves accessible and enjoyable facilities such as footpaths and parks for all to use. Our council must be focused on the needs of all its citizens. I will ensure that comprehensive consultation is undertaken with the community on projects that affect them and that everyone’s needs are taken into consideration before decisions are made. Our community needs a representative that listens to them and acts on their behalf. I will fight for the needs of others and will be a strong and impartial advocate for Division 6.

I have lived in Browns Plains for 14 years, my work background covers private and government sectors.
I ran my own business and understand budgeting. In 2018, I was a City of Logan Safe City Award Nominee and safety is a passion. I will ensure more of the budget goes to the west for community projects and infrastructure. Key to my focus is improved facilities and infrastructure that includes safety for our seniors.
HAIGEN BAMFORD DIVISION 7
I will strive for improvement in provisions, efficiencies and benefits for the people of Logan City.
I will work with State Government and Federal Bodies to improve the following:
More accessibility to health services, including mental health, especially for children and young adults; Cost of living; Better Schooling (principals held accountable for their decisions); Better services and support for troubled teens; Affordable Schooling, more outdoor facilities and activities. I will commit to delivering the best feasible services for the least amount.

If elected I’d replace the outdated infrastructure in Division 7.
Unlike the other west Logan divisions, Division 7 is older and the infrastructure is reaching the end of its life. It is crucial we act on this now. I want to mature the suburbs of the division in line with its age and make our community the place where people want to live. I envisage revitalised parks, community gardens. I want to see the new council restore the trust of residents by making decisions that are in the best interests of all.

I will lobby federal and state government to deliver their commitments, ensure parks are family friendly and will usable and essential services are conveniently available.
Through a combination of transparency, commitment and fresh ideas, I will provide leadership. I will listen and act on issues brought to my attention in a timely fashion. I will attend community events and meetings and ensure division 7 receives a fair share of the city infrastructure spending.
CLINTON PATTISON DIV 7
I will champion projects to ease road congestion problems. I will push for Inland Rail to be re-routed to Gladstone to ensure it ends in a state-owned port and doesn’t result in trucks in our suburbs.
I will ensure our footpath network is well maintained and connected and I will work with police to reduce hooning and to seek damages against hoons. Mr Pattison ran for the LNP in the 2017 state election and for the federal seat of Rankin last year.
HALE SAAFI, DIV 7
Hale Saafi is a qualified mechanical fitter and turner trade person working in the water and waste water industry and plastic recycling for 15 years.
According to his facebook page, he wants to “keep rates affordable”. He wants footpaths for all new developments; create more revenue from waste products; develop a market to sell recycled products and promises to give $7000 a year from his salary to charity. He wants to improve parks and work with stakeholders to improve the city.
JANINE WALFORD DIVISION 7
I will provide honest and transparent representation as an independent.
My background in community sport, living at Boronia Heights, a small-business owner, and a community engagement officer for 11 years, gives me an appreciation of local issues. I will advocate for property owners impacted by the Inland Rail; I will work with and support small business and support local sporting clubs and community groups. I will also advocate for improved public transport. We can do better as council.
DIVISION 8
PETER BRACKSTONE DIV 8
As a self-funded independent candidate my focus is on Logan as a whole, and Division 8 in particular, with no hidden agendas.
I’m open, honest and want the best for all. A fresh start from a fresh face. I run my own IT company and I’m involved in local business groups, and regularly involve myself in making changes for business at state and federal levels. I’ve initiated and seen through changes to roads, signage, road safety and landscaping.
ELIJAH BUOL DIVISION 8
I will work for improved road and public transport. I will fight for maintenance and construction of new footpaths, swimming pool, recreational facilities, upgrade sports facilities, parks, more buses and bus stops.
I will champion the needs of local community centres, to ensure they are fully equipped.
I will fight for small businesses by cutting council red tape and encouraging initiatives that allow them to grow and employ local. I will fight for employment initiatives.
JACOB HEREMAIA DIVISION 8
I was horrified when our council was sacked. I decided I was going to do something about it.
I’m a qualified project manager and have worked on large projects. I’m still working full-time while campaigning so I can afford to fund my campaign and not accept donations. I haven’t taken a cent from anyone and I’m not a part of any political party. I don’t owe any favours. We need to upgrade our roads, invest in our infrastructure and end corruption. If elected, I’ll get it done.
GEORGE KOLIC DIVISION 8
My No1 priority is to start a western Logan CCTV program.
I have spent my life in security and know how to roll out such a program. I am involved in security at Parliament House.
I will start the Western Logan Alliance of Councillors. Our corridor has been asked to shoulder the burden of the growth without the funding. We need to unite as a group of councillors to get the funding from George St and Canberra.
KYLIE SLATER DIVISION 8
I will ensure all Division 8 residents get a fair go. My vote will be based in “fact” not “favours” and my voice will be informed by the eyes and ears of Division 8.
I will not be confused by bureaucracy nor led astray by slick spruikers or self-interest seekers. What I don’t already know, I will learn. Clear deliverables will be supported not production of glossy documents. I will work to improve access to public transport and assure safe walkable neighbourhoods.
DIVISION 9
SCOTT BANNAN DIVISION 9
Mr Bannan, who has lived in Logan for more than 45 years, left the One Nation Party and is running as an independent.
He does not believe party politics have a place in local government. He is on the record for opposing high-density housing. He said he got on well with state politicians on both sides of the fence including Jon Krause and Linus Power.
HELEN COWLEY DIVISION 9
I will fight to widen Mt Lindesay Hwy to four lanes at least to our southern boundary and for an Integrated Transport Network and better infrastructure.
I will push for small businesses to enable jobs growth and champion care for our environment. I will not be just about roads, rates and rubbish. I will support families and the Division 9 community.
ROBERT LYE DIVISION 9
I will get this city back on a straight path, having had experience as a councillor.
During my term I gained knowledge in finance, health, town planning and works committees. I will read my agendas, ask questions of residents before I vote. Many times you have to listen to residents on when they take up a petition, but you must always study the petition and get information from officers before you make decisions.
ROB MORRIS DIVISION 9
I will listen and work with the residents and take their concerns and ideas to other councillors.
I promise to work hard to achieve resolutions and improvements. The current administrator implemented guides and procedures for the new council. I will work with the council team to improve on these in the best interest of all residents. I will help support local business, community groups, schools and residents.
MATHEW OWENS DIVISION 9
I will help businesses grow with the “buy local” campaigns, local tenders and removing red tape where possible. I will fight Illegal dumping by helping people dump responsibly and punishing those who don’t.
Council should invest in programs that provide value for money or community value. My vote will reflect this. I will push for more recycling and support our local service clubs and sporting clubs through quality public infrastructure and support frameworks. I will also work to improve parks and make sure we have great public spaces including a park for Munruben.
RICHARD TOY DIVISION 9
My family has lived in the division since 1975. Serving our area with our earthmoving business played an important role in working on much of the region’s infrastructure.
For 25 years I have worked in civil construction and mining as a machine operator and site supervisor. I worked for Leighton’s Thiess and I currently work for BMA. I have also managed my own projects including residential and industrial buildings.

SCOTT BEATTIE DIVISION 10
If I win, I will advocate for council to spend money back with Logan businesses wherever possible.
I will apply a small business mindset to council spending in an effort to apply downward pressure on council rates and apply the same work ethic that I have in my own small business to ensure that each and every decision is in the best interests and needs of Logan residents and in turn, Division 10 constituents.
JOSH HANBIDGE DIVISION 10
Part of what I love about Division 10 is our wide open spaces. I will advocate for a sensible, sustainable approach to development; prioritising a reduction in red tape for home improvements and multi-generational living.
I will fight for a proactive approach to disaster mitigation, working with all levels of government. I will push for solar lighting, better accessibility for the elderly and disabled, free Wi-Fi, safer parks, more recycling and more smart technology.
BRUCE LAKER DIVISION 10
I will listen and communicate with all constituents, identify the real issues to build an inclusive approach to resolution.
Residing in Springwood from 1981 then to Shailer Park in 1988, I am a true Logan resident. Careers in Civil Engineering infrastructure and TAFE lecturing has given me extensive experience in a council disciplines. My desire is a sustainable future, where environment and development exist in harmony, where families rise, remember and return.
MIRIAM STEMP DIVISION 10
I will work hard, act with integrity and be transparent and accountable. I will stand up for others and what I believe is right, listen to the community and do my best to implement positive change.
I will address safety concerns relating to roads and crime; propose elected officials be prevented from purchasing investment properties in Logan during tenure; recommend free off-peak public transport for seniors and veterans across Logan.

BRYAN BARTLETT DIVISION 11
I will be accessible to all residents and attentive to the issues they bring up. It is important that your division representative listens to your concerns, and where necessary, acts as your advocate in bringing these matters up to the relative parties.
I plan to introduce regular Community Hall meetings, where I can talk directly with residents on what Council is doing, and get constructive feedback about how the needs of the community are being met.
KATHLEEN DE LEON DIVISION 11
I will work with the community, developers, investors and levels of government to build a community that everyone will enjoy and meet the needs of the expected 230,000 people.
I will work with LOED to support small businesses. I will advocate for the environment. I will advocate for the acceptance and implementation of the West Mount Lindesay Highway Development Study (2010). I will stand by my community against coal trains.

I ensure we are no longer the forgotten division and work to bring the community together. I will always advocate for the funding our community deserves especially as we live in Division 11 which is the fastest growing in population and geographically one of the largest in the Logan City Council area.
DIVISION 12
NATHAN HAMON DIVISION 12
I will ensure the eyes and ears of the community have their voices heard.
Community participation in planning and decision making is vital. Plans that affect the community should not be made only by elected officials and big money interests. I will use tested methods of town improvement such as crime prevention through environmental design, main street rejuvenation, parks and playgrounds. I will push for better accessibility to parks.

As a local dad, I’m passionate about our community. I believe we deserve much better from our council. For too long, we have been taken for granted.
Our council became an embarrassment while our living costs and rates continued to rise. It’s time to have a council that listens and works for us.
That’s why I’m running as an independent. I’ve lived in the Logan area for 10 years and my wife and I are now raising our family in Eagleby.

I will represent residents of Division 12 (Beenleigh, Eagleby and Mount Warren Park) with honesty and transparency.

If I win, I will, in the first 100 days, pursue future-proofing the new council’s ‘Code of Conduct’ by legislation.
I will tackle law and order issues and build on our quality of life for all. Eagleby residents are in trouble, with the issues of open drug scenes, hooning and transport. Mount Warren Park wants cleaner government and upgraded local family parks. I will lobby to introduce Wi-Fi/charging and CCTVs in all major parks in Division 12.

I will be an advocate for all. I will work with all councillors to right wrongs, to push for transparency, efficiency and ethical behaviour. I will help drive change.
I will challenge current practices of council. I will focus on the environment and sustainability. Putting climate change debates to the side, there are countless studies showing that sustainable and energy saving practices save money. I will champion local business
