Windaroo Valley State High student Alyssa Brooker’s artwork will be displayed across Australia after she won Coles’ national bag design competition.
The new limited-edition reusable jute bag, featuring her koala-inspired design, will go on sale in all Coles supermarkets across the country from this week.
Alyssa was one of six students to win the prestigious competition, designed to show the retailer’s commitment to remove single-use plastic bags in its supermarkets.
The aspiring 17-year-old creative arts and digital media student, said she was excited to see her shopping bags hit the shelves.
“I’m also a little embarrassed that my little art piece will be seen by so many people,” she said. “It’s great to know they will help encourage shoppers to use reusable bags.
“I believe that looking after our environment is extremely important.
“All generations need to take care of the beautiful world around us for a sustainable world.”
Windaroo Valley State High head of arts Jade Lindon said the school was proud of Alyssa.
“Her success has inspired other students and also contributed to the establishment of an outdoor classroom space featuring stainless steel benches where students can create large art pieces in our school,” she said.
Coles state general manager Jerry Farrell said the sale of reusable community bags was a win-win for Coles customers, the environment, community organisations and young artists such as Alyssa.
“We are so pleased to be able to support schools and celebrate aspiring artists like Alyssa by showcasing her work on our reusable bags,” he said.
“The bags will be seen and appreciated by millions of customers who shop at Coles each week.”
The range of community bags designed by schoolkids has been extremely popular with Coles shoppers since they were first launched in June 2018.
The bags have also raised more than $4 million for community groups such as SecondBite, Little Athletics and Clean Up Australia.
The Coles environmentally friendly jute bags with Alyssa’s design cost $3.
