A professional Gold Coast boxer who allegedly tortured and kidnapped a woman with a group of men in a terrifying home invasion has applied for bail.
Liam Kevin Callanan, 28, was charged with torture, deprivation of liberty, enter dwelling with intent, three counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and two counts of common assault.
Beenleigh Magistrates Court heard on February 22 that the offences allegedly occurred on November 17 last year in the Logan suburb of Bannockburn.
Police alleged Mr Callanan was with a group of men who broke into a home and assaulted a woman with weapons, holding her captive and torturing her.
But defence lawyer Corey Cullen said the prosecution’s case was weak.
“The prosecution case struggles to identify the involvement of my client, the identification is based on him and his co-workers at a car dealership being seen at the location of the crime,” he said.
“In any event there will be a long delay in gathering all the material and he has no criminal history.”
The court heard Mr Callanan was a professional boxer with a win-loss record of 17-1.
He lived in Tallebudgera and worked at a car detailing business in Tweeds Head.
“He may need to travel for a boxing fight, so I ask there be a condition in his bail that he is allowed to leave the Gold Coast,” Mr Cullen said.
“Perhaps your honour could impose a condition that he must not attend the Logan area?”
Magistrate Ron Kilner granted bail under strict conditions that Mr Callanan must not contact any of the co-accused or the alleged victim.
He must also report to Coolangatta police station and not attend Logan, where the alleged offences were committed.
A brief of evidence was ordered for March 27 and the matter will next be mentioned on April 10 in Beenleigh Magistrates Court.
