A 19-year-old Marsden woman says she’s had an “incredible wakeup call” and wants to kick her drug habit after landing in jail charged with a string of stealing and property-related offences, a court has heard.

Kirsty-Anne Clark-Shields pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Thursday to 23 charges including three counts of stealing, two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, two counts of entering premises with intent and evasion.

The court heard the teen was caught driving disqualified behind the wheel of a car she had taken from her friend at Woodridge on May 11.

Magistrate Terry Duroux said she had basically taken her friend’s car and used it as if it was her own.

“With friends like you, who needs enemies,” he said.

The court heard Clark-Shields had also been charged for entering a premises and stealing in Southport on September 25 before entering another premises and stealing at Shailer Park on the same day.

Clark-Shield’s lawyer told the court her client started using drugs including meth and cannabis at a young age to “mask her feelings” after experiencing trauma.

“After she left school, in her words, everything went downhill, she was mixing with the wrong crowd and started using drugs,” she said.

She said her client’s time in custody had been an “incredible wakeup call” for her and she’s now expressed a strong desire to live a clean and healthy life.

Magistrate Terry Duroux said her response to her previous community service order was “nothing short of disgraceful” after failing to turn up 21 times.

She was sentenced to 50 days imprisonment and given an immediate parole release date with the time she spent in custody marked as time served.

She was put on a two-year probation order and disqualified from driving for two years.
