Tradies south of Brisbane have been working around the clock to put the finishing touches on a major fast-food hub, anchored by KFC, set to open on Saturday.
The state-of-the-art KFC drive-through, complete with digitised menu boards, was scheduled to open tomorrow, but will now open on Saturday after storms delayed site works.
The complex, on Logan River Rd, opposite the Aldi shopping complex, will eventually house the state’s newest Zarraffa’s drive-through, due to open in December and Guzman Y Gomez.
The Bethania KFC drive-through is in the heart of the growth suburbs of Holmview, Bahrs Scrub and Beenleigh, where there is already a KFC and a McDonald’s.
It opens three weeks after major outcry from fried chicken lovers in nearby Beenleigh when customers were forced to go elsewhere when the store at James St ran out of chicken wings and staff closed the drive-through on October 22.
There is also a McDonald’s at Holmview, which is less than 3km away and coffee stores in Beenleigh.
The KFC will open every day from 10am to 10pm.
Bethania restaurant general manager Chantel Mathison, who will oversee the day-to-day running of the new operation, said 60 staff had had extensive training to ensure customers would be well served.
“Bethania is a small Queensland community with a big love for the Colonel’s secret herbs and spices – and the new energetic team will provide locals with a well-deserved Zinger box,” she said.
“The new team have been training behind the scenes in the lead up the opening and cannot wait to get the restaurant in full swing to provide the best customer experience for the locals of Bethania.
“We’ll be welcoming locals with a craving to the new restaurant from Friday.”
The site will also be home to a new Zarraffa’s drive-though and Bethania residents will no longer have to travel to Eagleby to get a piping hot brew.
The Australian-owned specialty coffee franchisor announced plans for two new outlets this month with the Bethania drive-through service a surprise after the coffee giant closed its nearby restaurant in Beenleigh in September.
Zarraffa’s managing director and founder Kenton Campbell said despite a tough year dominated by COVID restrictions, the company was opening the new drive-through at Bethania and in Tamworth, after closing some outlets including the one at Beenleigh.
He said the closures were due to the company’s long-term coffee buying strategy, end-of-lease periods and desire to move from traditional shopping centres to drive-through sites.
“While we have closed some sites, due to high rents and end of lease periods — especially in shopping centre locations — this has all been a part of the plan to migrate the business to greater convenience in the specialty coffee market,” he said.
“Only time will tell what economic conditions the next 12 months will deliver, but we will continue to provide a daily dose of normality for our customers, keep growing in more locations, and keep employing as many local people as we can. It’s about doing our part, one cup at a time.”
The new Bethania store will be at 412 Logan River Road, next to the KFC and will be operated by long-term franchisees, Bill and Claire Zavos.
The couple, along with sons Dillon and Sam, also owns and operates the Runaway Bay, Helensvale North and Oxenford stores. It is hoped they will employ about 110 local staff.
