A Meadowbrook aged care facility worker busted with illegal weapons and drugs turned to marijuana at age 13 to cope with his anxieties, a court has heard.

Father of two Joshua Steven Cois, 25, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday to two counts of possessing dangerous drugs and two counts of unlawful possession of weapons.

The court heard Cois, who works as a maintenance officer at a number of aged care facilities, had his home in Meadowbrook searched by police on May 16.

The search revealed his stash of LSD, cannabis, 12 water pipes, a taser and a knuckleduster.

Cois’ lawyer told the court her client suffered from anxiety and had self-medicated with marijuana.

She said he has since been prescribed medicinal marijuana.

“I’m advised my client began using marijuana in year eight and was 13 years of age,” she said.

“It was a way of dealing with his parent’s divorce at the time and life’s hurdles.

“I’m advised cannabis has been a daily use since around the age of 18.”

She said the weapons were being kept as collectables and not for self-defence.

Magistrate Michael O’Driscoll said he was concerned about Cois’ employability with his continued use of medicinal cannabis.

“I’m confident that an aged care facility will probably not be interested in a person with a medicinal cannabis addiction,” he said.

He was sentenced to probation for a period of 12 months. No conviction was recorded.
